With old water boilers and boiler chimneys, there are a few common problems that could mean it’s time for a replacement. Here are 3 things to look for:
1. Oversized Flue
Some water boilers are attached to old masonry chimneys that were once used to vent old furnaces or other boilers but are now repurposed to vent new, high efficiency boilers. If that’s the case for your home, your flue may actually be too big for the job. An oversized flue can lead to poor drafts, which won’t effectively vent boiler exhaust. That exhaust could end up back in your home creating a significant carbon monoxide risk. Oversized flues are also at increased risk of chimney damage from corrosion as well as freezing and thawing.
2. Short (or Missing) Chimney
In order to be effective, your boiler chimney needs to be the right size (or, it needs to be there in the first place!). If your chimney is too short or not connected, the exhaust from your boiler won’t be properly vented.
3. Sooty Debris
Gas water boilers producing soot are a real danger, and in some cases should be shut off immediately. This is a major sign of improper venting and it means that your boiler and chimney should be inspected and repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
Other Signs of Trouble
If you notice any of the following symptoms around your boiler or boiler chimney, it might be time to think about a replacement:
- Damp spots on your walls
- Soot buildup around your boiler
- Stained ceilings
- Blistered wallpaper or peeling paint
- Crumbling bricks on your masonry chimney
- Eroded mortar joints
That’s where we come in. At East Side Ventilation we can perform a full inspection on your boiler and boiler chimney, and let you know if any repairs are necessary. We can then supply the parts you need, install them for you, and provide yearly inspections and maintenance to keep your appliance running at peak performance.
