Seven Ways to Maintain Your AC
Many of us don’t think about our air conditioner until something goes wrong. However, maintenance is the most effective way to prevent potentially expensive repairs.
To help keep your unit in good working order and avoid the need for repairs or a replacement, here are seven tasks that should be part of your routine air conditioner maintenance.
1. Clean the unit
Dirt and debris can accumulate on the coils, which reduces efficiency and increases stress on the machine’s mechanical components. Start by cleaning the outdoor unit, including the condenser coil, followed by the evaporator coil in the indoor system.
2. Check the compressor
If the compressor doesn’t have enough refrigerant, it might start to work too hard. This will reduce the system’s overall efficiency and longevity. Make sure the refrigerant tubes aren’t blocked or leaking.
3. Inspect the drainage system
The condensation drain line and drain pan must be in good shape and unobstructed. Otherwise, excess moisture can get trapped in the unit or inside the house. This can lead to malfunctions and mould growth.
4. Check the fans
Most central air systems have two fans. The one in the outdoor unit pulls air through the coil fins, and the indoor blower fan moves air through the ducts. A problem with either of these fans can cause the entire system to malfunction.
5. Lubricate the components
While newer units are sealed, older models often have ports near the fan motors and other moving parts. These openings allow you to apply a lubricant periodically. Check your owner’s manual to find out if your unit requires this type of maintenance.
6. Inspect the controls
Electrical issues with an air conditioner can be serious. Make sure all the electrical components, from the controls to the power supply, are in good condition and performing correctly.
7. Change the filters
Dirt in the filters blocks air flow and makes the system needlessly work harder, so check them monthly. They’ll either need to be cleaned or changed, depending on your unit. Clean filters can reduce your air conditioning costs by up to 15 per cent.
